How are classes taught?
Classes consist of online audio material of different Spanish speakers and web-based exercises. The online audio is posted twice a week with the transcript, reference material, vocabulary exercises, tips, Spanish usage explanations, common errors, commonly used words in Spanish-speaking conferences, and much more. The course consists of online self-practice conferences.
When do Classes Start?
Instruction begins on January 11, 2010.
How long is the training?
Classes are divided in four (4) modules in one year. Every module consists of 24 conferences in audio and their corresponding web-based exercises. Some students need more time, some less; it depends on the workload and if the student can devote all their time to attending classes. Anyway, this course does not guarantee that you will be able to interpret into you active languages since simultaneous interpreting entails a wide range of factors, such as interpreting skills, solid listening comprehension skills, excellent command of the source and target language, among many others. All we do is post the necessary material for interpreters to practice and guide them with web based exercises.
Who is the instructor?
Martin Soriano is a Professor of Simultaneous Interpretation at McDonough, the leading interpretation school in Argentina. (www.mcdonoughsrl.com). After completing studies in California, he earned his bachelor's degree at Universidad del Salvador in Spanish-English Sworn Translation in Argentina, then he pursued postgraduate studies in simultaneous interpretation and teaching. He is also a certified foreign language instructor and has taught for several years before becoming a translator. He became a certified translator in 1994 and a conference interpreter in 1998. His background includes several seminars and classes taught at the University and consecutive and simultaneous interpretation classes at McDonough, as well as hundreds of conferences interpreted so far. Martin is an AIIC Spanish English Interpreter, based in Buenos Aires. Currently, Mr. Soriano coordinates more than 10 conferences on a weekly basis. All of the material is based on conferences he has been interpreting. Martin Soriano is also the author of Simultaneous Interpretation Challenges 1 (Desafíos de la Interpretación Simultánea 1), a package of advanced Spanish interpreter-training material, which he intends to continue, publishing his next book (Simultaneous Interpretation Challenges 2) during 2009.
How can students have access to the training?
Every student is given a username and password to access the database of conferences and exercises posted in www.interpretacion.com.ar.
What will I learn?
If you are enrolling in a module program, the first module will be spent interpreting "general conferences." General conferences comprises four areas: United Nations, corporate topics usually addressed in the private sector market, humanities, and social science. There is a lot of emphasis on United Nations topics since this is a solid prerequisite for any professional interpreter. By learning the talents of both listening and understanding Spanish effectively, you ensure confidence in your simultaneous interpreting skills.
You do have an element of choice in these classes and should take the subjects most interesting to you.
